The dream to become a doctor in India could be full filled up by Medical entrances like NEET, AIIMS, JIPMER, WBJEE, AFMC etc. But the most popular entrance among students of India is NEET-UG.
Every year approximately 15 lakh students appear NEET across the country, but out of which only 30,455 seats are available in Govt. Medical Colleges whereas 36,165 seats are available in Private Medical Colleges. Therefore, only 66,620 (Excluding seats in two Central Universities) students will be fortunate enough to grab their seats in medical colleges – According to Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).
In Assam 726 seats are available in 6 Medical Colleges. Like other states of India, out of these seats 85% seats are under State quota and remaining 15% are under All India quota. Therefore, for medical aspirants of Assam only 617 seats are available.
On 22 nd of June 2019, Medical Council of India (MCI) has sanctioned addition of 174 more seats for MBBS courses in six Medical Colleges of Assam, which means it is almost like opening of two new Medical Colleges, as a new Medical College can have only 100 seats.
Assam Director of Medical Education, Mr. Anup Kumar Barman has stated that from 2019-2020 academic session these seats will be implemented in all six Medical Colleges of Assam. Out of 174 seats 10% will be reserved for General category students from Economically Weaker Section (EWS).
